Hello and a warm welcome to the TGW blog!

Today, we’re excited to share a chat between our CEO, Lou, and an author she greatly admires; the incredibly talented Meridith Taylor Strout.

If you haven’t yet discovered her work, you’re in for a real treat. Meridith is the author of 'The More the Merrier,' a captivating multi-sensory musical experience that offers an interactive and enjoyable way for kids to learn about diversity and inclusion. Stay tuned to learn why it is a must-have for parents, teachers, and music educators alike, and why this author is someone you’ll want to keep tabs on!

Hey Meridith, it’s Lou here! I just wanted to say I’m a massive fan of your book. As a former teacher, I really appreciate hands-on learning and its effectiveness.

The title is a phrase I grew up hearing often. What inspired you to select it for this book?

The More the Merrier is a playful pun that works for two reasons. First, the story is about including others—expanding your group or circle—so the more people involved, the better. Second, the main character, Ella, receives a set of musical instruments for her birthday. The story features five percussion instruments, all of which are available for purchase, making the book multisensory. Children can engage in a hands-on learning experience by playing the instruments before, after, or even while reading the story.

Absolutely, it is what makes your book so special, along with the way it goes beyond just the joy of music. For our readers, what are some key life lessons that you weave into the narrative too?

The book highlights that including others not only brings joy to them but also to you. I always tell my kids, “We rise by lifting others.” That can be done with our words, actions, or even something as simple as a smile across the room. Inclusion is something we can practice at any age—whether 7 or 77—because everyone wants to feel part of a community.

That's so true, and what a brilliant way to articulate it! I also checked out your website, and it’s fantastic! There’s so much to dive into. Can you share how you decided to sell the instruments featured in your book alongside it?

ree

I collaborated with both an occupational therapist and a physical therapist to choose the instruments featured in the story. Each one is a percussion instrument that produces rhythmic sound, is easy to grip to support fine motor skills, and provides tactile feedback by vibrating in your hand when played.

Oh, that’s brilliant! I also took a look at your Instagram, and I was so impressed! I thought it would be fun to play a quick game that you sometimes feature on your page:

This or that:

- Dancing or singing Dancing

- Writing or music Music

- Maracas or tambourine Maracas

- Hand bells or wood sounder Hand bells

- Slow tempo or fast tempo Fast tempo

- Folk or classical Folk

- Pop or rock Pop

Amazing, thank you for playing!

You clearly have a lot of insight into music! I’d love to hear about one of your favourite instruments.

I’ve always loved the piano and have long wanted to learn to play. There’s something magical about watching a pianist make it look effortless—I still hope to pick it up someday.

Agreed, and what would you say sparked your interest in music in the first place?

My professional background is in early literacy development, and I’ve always been passionate about books. I wanted to bring in a musical, hands-on component to enhance the excitement of early reading and literacy.

Well, it definitely worked! Moreover, the illustrations in your book really add to that excitement and depth. What was your experience like in finding the right illustrator for your vision?

Finding the right illustrator is half the battle in publishing a children’s book. The manuscript takes time, but the illustrations need to pop with color and energy. I love how my illustrator, Remesh Ram brought the characters to life—happy and vibrant throughout the story. There’s also a hidden character on each page, which children have enjoyed spotting in funny scenarios.

How lovely! Speaking of your audience, who do you think would gain the most from reading your book?

The More the Merrier is ideal for beginning readers, especially children at the VPK level or in kindergarten through third grade. The message resonates with anyone who could use a reminder that including others creates joy. The book has even been used in music classes for toddlers and elementary students. As a gift set, pairing the book with the instruments makes for a unique and engaging learning experience. The book also comes with supplemental learning packets that can be found on my website. There is a VPK packet for children between the ages of three and five and a kindergarten through third grade learning packet for children at the elementary school level.

Fantastic, thank you for sharing that! Lastly, where can people get their hands on a copy, and what exciting plans do you have for the future?

The book is available on Amazon, my website, and at my local Barnes & Noble stores. I also have several author visits scheduled in the coming months, which I love because they give me the chance to share the message of kindness and joy directly with children.

Looking ahead, I’m working on my next book, due out in spring 2026. It also carries a meaningful message, and this time around, with more experience, I’m excited to share my author journey openly on social media.

I’m so glad to hear this news and I’m looking forward to following your success and author journey. Wishing you all the best! Lou x
